Artwork Statement:
Andy Vogt works with a variety of materials related to architecture and themes surrounding its impermanence. “Undergrounded” 2021 is part of a body of work that utilizes salvaged wood lath from demolished walls of pre-1950’s architecture that he collects from construction sites around San Francisco. Using the standardized qualities of line and a varied range of inherent earth tones, this found wood has become his drawing medium.
The wood’s natural history as well as its use in vintage architecture and its upheaval during demolition all influence the structural drawings that he composes, depicting varying degrees of volume and solidity in shapes that are somewhere between forming and dissolving. As sculptural drawings, the final works operate as both two and three dimensional objects, playing on our innate reflex to perceive an idea of three dimensionally.
He highlights the latent potential of this humble detritus by collecting and cataloging the lath in a library based on formal terms of color and texture. By focusing on these aspects of the material he amplifies the importance of each line in the artwork; each piece of wood and its shade, shape, repetition and interruption.
