ARTwork statement:
Existing while black is to live in defiance of death, hopelessness, poverty, and self doubt. It may seem like just a piece of pop culture, but jumpman: the iconic logo of a black person in flight, with only the aid of their practice and labor is revolutionary.
ARTIST BIO:
Tosha Stimage (b. 1982) is a multidisciplinary artist using a variety of mediums to examine and explore potential language relationships. Her work disrupts historical and cultural assumptions of “meaning” by recontextualizing material forms. Stimage is a recipient of numerous awards/residences including Facebook artist-in-residence, Toby Devan Lewis Award, Murphy and Cadogan Award, Real Time and Space artist-in-residence, and the AICAD Fellowship. She currently works and resides in Berkeley.
