Anna Valdez
Studio Plants and Animal Skulls, 2020
oil and acrylic on canvas
62”H x 55”W
ARTWORK STATEMENT:
This piece is a continuation of my investigation into autobiographical, and western historical still life painting. Working directly from temporary installations arranged in my studio for reference, I am able to draw from my personal objects and domestic space. The lush environment of color, patterns, plants, and vases with pictorial elements generates a contrast to the two animal skulls. Playing with the symbolism from the Vanitas tradition I reference a timeless subject emblematic of both a personal and collective experience.
