Queer Like Me, 2020

archival pigment print
21”H x 25”W

ARTwork statement:

The photograph ‘Queer Like Me’ is part of a series titled A ‘Rose is a Rose’. The work utilizes the symbols, tropes and objects of the legendary relationship between Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas. Stein was raised in Oakland and Toklas in San Francisco. Their kinship, relational collaboration, queerness and moment in history is at the root of the work. They were a team of dualities - artist and muse, domestic and external, political and matriarchal, gender differences and sexual sameness. Using first edition Stein books and carefully collected porcelain roses the work is both embodying and illustrating the relationship of lovers and the social and political landscape they occupied.
